What Is PelviC Health Physiotherapy?

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy involves the assessment and treatment of the pelvic floor muscles. Everyone can benefit from consulting a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, as everyone has a pelvic floor. A Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is a professional with advanced training specifically in the muscles and functions of the pelvic floor. They employ various techniques to enhance pelvic floor function through:

  • Exercise
  • Education
  • Both external and internal hands-on therapy
  • Lifestyle modification

Pelvic Health Physiotherapy encompasses much more than just Kegels. A skilled pelvic floor physiotherapist will tailor a treatment plan to help clients achieve their personal goals.

*Note*

Currently, Stephanie will only treat Pelvic Health patients who have female genitalia and are over the age of 18, unless specific discussions have been held with their legal guardians.

When should you see a pelvic health physiotherapist?

Incontinence

Frequency and occurrence (hint: it’s not normal to get up in the middle of the night to pee).

Pregnancy-Related Issues

Preparing for birth and dealing with the aftermath (hint: although it is common, it is not normal to have incontinence issues after having a baby).

Pelvic and Abdominal Pain

When it’s more than just an upset stomach.

Persistent Low Back and Hip Pain

Sometimes, when conventional physiotherapy isn’t helping, it could be an underlying pelvic floor issue.

Sexual Health

When sex just doesn’t feel as good as it should. A healthy pelvic floor is a sexy pelvic floor!

What will happen during a visit to my Pelvic Health Physiotherapist?

Your first visit to a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist is a comprehensive step toward understanding and improving your pelvic health. This step-by-step guide outlines the process during your initial visit, helping to prepare you for the consultation and treatment phases.

Initial Assessment

Your Pelvic Health Physiotherapist will start by asking about your health history and reasons for visiting, covering topics like pain, incontinence, pregnancies, sexual history, and previous injuries. Every detail matters—there’s nothing too small or embarrassing. The more you share, the better they can tailor your treatment. They will also discuss your goals for physiotherapy.

Physical Examination

The assessment includes both an external and internal exam. Despite sounding unusual, these exams are generally simpler and less discomforting than a PAP test.

Treatment Plan

After completing the assessment, your physiotherapist will create a personalized treatment plan. This plan may include a home exercise program, educational resources, and other appropriate treatments. Their ultimate goal is to help you achieve yours.
